"Like most guys, I'm a sucker for easy sex and a fast buck. Unlike most guys, I should know better."

Finalist for the Lambda Award in Gay Mystery, Boystown Three Nick Nowak Mysteries takes place in Chicago during the early 1980s. Haunted by his abrupt departure from the Chicago Police Department and the end of his relationship with librarian Daniel Laverty, Nick Nowak is a beat cop-turned-dogged private investigator. In this first book of the best-selling series, Nick works through three cases a seemingly simple missing persons search, an arson investigation, and a suicide that turns out to be anything but. While working the cases, Nick moves through a series of casual relationships until he meets homicide detective Bert Harker and begins a tentative relationship.

The Boystown Mysteries are 18+ for gay sexual content, language and violence.

Shortly before the beginning of this novel Nick has been rejected & hurt by everyone he cares about: his lover, his family & the Chicago Police Department. This rejection is caused, in various ways, by something he can't control: his sexuality (Marshall Thornton mentioned this in an interview I cannot link to here). He can't control who he is, he can't control who he's attracted to and he can't change minds. Nick is deadlocked and his isolation is what pervades this series. He spends the course of 5 books (so far, the 6th will be out May 23rd & the 7th should be out in 2015) attempting to come to terms with his situation.

Of course, Nick isn't able to express this directly. He is abrupt, aloof & ironic in his speech and narration. The book reads like a case file and any emotion has to sneak in through the back door. Nick reminds me of the roles played by Humphrey Bogart. From the age of seven I wasn't sure if I wanted to be Bogie or marry him. It's still a tough decision. I love the cynical, jaded men that Bogie frequently played: Rick in Casablanca, Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon and Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep. They're outsiders; the cynical PI (or bar owner) who at heart is a deeply disappointed romantic.

These men are good at only two things: solving mysteries & making themselves miserable. They smoke too much, drink too much, listen to non-stop jazz & consume so much coffee I'm surprised they don't spend whole days on the toilet. They may yearn for their lovers, but it's unlikely they'll turn down an easy lay or sacrifice their sense of justice to achieve some sort of false sense of happiness. For me this type of man is the ultimate romantic hero. That's how I see Nick Nowak: Chicago's answer to Sam Spade & Philip Marlowe. (If you've ever a classic PI mystery, you'll know I'm not making much of a leap here.)

Mr. Thornton has written some gay romance, try The Christmas Visit or The Ghost Slept Over but to my delight he seems incapable of writing a story typical of the genre. It's entirely possible that Nick will meet a new love or reunite with an old one, someone he could perhaps create a life with. But this is not a book where our heroes, united in true love, drive off into the suburbs after experiencing a case of Sudden Child Syndrome -- you know, when a family member/ex-girlfriend dies/takes off & suddenly leaves 2 men with a precocious 5 year old? If Marshall Thornton ever writes the words "and they lived happily ever after" in this series I'll know he's on crack. It's likely Nick won't end up with a lover, but will find some peace in his life. I would like that, but I'm pretty sure I shouldn't count on either option because "Boystown" is not the type of series that will offer you any guarantees. The readers, like Nick, have to find a way to happily exist in the unknown.

This may not be the series for you. It has group sex, a severe lack of condom usage, drug use, corrupt cops, rampant homophobes and a frequently self-loathing detective who often makes questionable decisions. It also provides a lesson on the history of the men we so love to read about. But if you're anything like me it's one of the few series that makes you want to buy 657 copies & hand them out to strangers on the street.

Boystown Three Nick Nowak Mysteries Boystown Mysteries Book 1 edition by Marshall Thornton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed the first book in the Boystown series and I'm looking forward to reading the second one. I found scenes with Nick and his estranged family members particularly entertaining. I also thought it was amusing that pretty much every gay man Nick crossed paths went wanted to hook up with him. Apparently he's quite a stud.
I'm not a great fan of detective stories but I found this mini-series to be entertaining and enjoyable. Nick Nowak has a dry sense of humour and the stories are all told by him. One is left with a sense of reality and the stories flow easily in an almost chatty style. I'm amazed and somewhat appalled that he seems to indulge in unprotected sex with so many different men but the sex he has always seems to be pretty good.
The explicit sex was a turn-off -- at first. Then I realized that it melded perfectly with the story the author was telling. At the end, every word written made sense. The best part of this book is that it's frozen in the 1980s. It brought back a flood of memories. As I read it, the book got me to recalling my own life in the 1980s. If you didn't live through the 80s, read it to get an historical perspective. Oh, the three mysteries are pretty good, too -- lively, interesting and all with a little twist that keeps you turning the pages. Oh, it's a quick read, too, and, sometimes, that's the kind of read you need.
Great book, and being that I actually lived in Chicago from 1977 - 1985 .... I remember well many of the places that are mentioned in the book. I knew he was going to be an exciting author when he introduced "The Loading Zone" which was right next to the bar I worked at ("La Cage aux Folles") on Oak St. I knew Chuck Renslow of the Gold Coast, Steve Rempas of "The Loading Zone" & "The Loading Dock" as well as Eddie Dugan of "The Bistro" and later "Paradise" when it located up on Broadway & Diversey area. The descriptions of what went on in these places is right on target. I knew I felt at home again listening to the description of places and locations in the Near North as well as Far North areas, The days of Ludes, "lines" and "acid" were all described in a way that I well remember while living right there in the Oak/Rush area. After reading of places and areas I had frequented years ago, I was hooked and knew I would finish the entire series without a doubt. I intend to read/listen to all the following books as well (if they are available in WhisperSync). There is just the right amount of sexual content to be quite titillating - but within a limit that steers from the pornographic back to the story line. My congratulations and thanks for portraying a time when I was in my youth in a very realistic, honest, precise and fun way. I have wonderful memories thanks to reading about the places I lived, loved and came of age in Chicago during those years.
After some pretty sad readings of gay mysteries, this book gives me hope. The writing has style and gives Nick a distinctive voice. The only down side is the gratuitous sex. Is this a murder mystery or a romance novel, or is the author trying to capture both types of readers? It distracts and disrupts. Two sex scenes were essential in story three, one with Campbell and the other at the conclusion. The rest were not. Will try another one to see if the story line does evolve along the lines the author ended it; if the author hasNick mature as a detective, and if the author can control the urge to write in sex where it is not needed it will be a good read.
